Sunday Roast near King’s Cross London

One of the best things about being in London on a Sunday is tucking into a proper roast dinner. Whether you’re a local or visiting for a few days, a Sunday roast is one of those traditions that never goes out of style.

It’s something that’s been part of British life for centuries – originally a big family meal after church – and nowadays it’s just as popular, whether you’re catching up with friends, treating yourself after a busy week, or fuelling up before heading home from a fun weekend.

There’s something about a plate piled high with roasties, veg, Yorkshire puds and lashings of gravy that hits the spot – especially when it’s done well. And while roast beef or chicken with all the trimmings are still the classics, lots of places around here offer a few more unusual options – as well as veggie and vegan alternatives – so there’s no reason to miss out.

We’re often asked by guests where to go for the best Sunday roast near King’s Cross, so I’ve pulled together a few of our tried-and-tested favourites – and some recommendations from elsewhere – all within easy reach of the Mentone.

Quick tip: If you don’t fancy queuing out the door for your Sunday lunch, be sure to book wherever that’s available. Otherwise, if you’re happy to wait will later in the day for your roast, do what we do and leave it till about 6pm or so. You might not get your first choice of meat or whatever – but it beats the rush and gives you a more laid back experience.

Sunday roast served Sundays from midday to 4.45pm

This is a beautiful place to eat in a swanky but laid back setting, and a firm favourite of our family’s. They offer a two or three course Sunday lunch menu with a choice of roasts, complete with Yorkshire puds, duck fat potatoes and all the trimmings.

It’s great because there are modern twists – with starters like buffalo burrata with smoked aubergine, and goat’s cheese crème brûlée – and then you’ve got your meat options – 28-day dry-aged beef sirloin, Suffolk pork belly, or Devon chicken. There’s also a côte de boeuf for two.

They do a feasting style joint for tables of four or more, and if you’ve got any room left, the desserts are out of this world – especially the apple, pear and blackberry crumble with cinnamon custard.

If you’re looking for alternatives to the traditional roast, you’ve got grilled salmon fillet with mash and lobster peppercorn sauce, and there’s the vegan Turkish-BBQ tenderstem with pomegranate, tahini, pickled red onion, sumac, turmeric, braised rice and crispy onions.

Definitely one to try if you’re looking for that Sunday classic lunch with a modern twist, set against a really nice backdrop.

Open from midday on Sundays – meals served 1pm-7pm

This is another of our family favourites, a welcoming pub on the hotel doorstep and also popular among our guests.

The Sunday roast comes with all the trimmings – and you definitely need to try and leave room for one of their traditional desserts.

If you’re into your ales, you’ll be spoilt with something like 30-40 different beers to choose from to accompany your lunch. There’s outside seating, and it’s always good service in there. For sure one of our top recommendations.

Whilst it’s not strictly in walking distance of the hotel (it would take you a good 40 minutes on foot), you can get to the Parakeet Pub in Kentish Town in less than 20 minutes by taxi or public transport – and by all accounts it comes highly recommended – which is why it’s on my must-try list and I’m sharing it with you as a bit of a wild card.

The Sunday roast menu changes with the seasons – just like the rest of the food at this pub restaurant – and it’s served all day Sunday. Examples of what’s on offer include hay smoked roast chicken, roast beef, lamb, and celeriac Wellington. Sharing menus include sea bream and sirloin.

The Parakeet is seriously popular – so be sure to book. Reservations open on the 1st of each month for the following month for groups of up to six people. There’s also a private dining room that seats up to 30 if you’re having a get together.

Everyone’s raving about it – so it seems it’s worth a try – once I’ve given it a go I’ll update this post.

Sunday opening times: 11am-11pm, Sunday roast served from noon till it’s gone

Allegedly, Mabel’s Tavern is haunted by the infamous Mabel, who despite having passed beyond the veil in the 1970s is still said to be heard operating the pub’s dumb waiter – which isn’t actually there anymore.

This traditional alehouse can be found between Euston and King’s Cross stations. Family and dog-friendly, it’s known for its classic British fare and wide choice of beers. There’s seating outside, and regular live sports screenings inside.

The Sunday roast – which I’m yet to personally try – consists of a choice of 30-day aged striploin of beef with horseradish sauce, or roast half chicken with cranberry sauce, both served with seasonal veg, roasted potatoes, gravy and Yorkshire pudding.

The veggie option is a cumin butternut squash and lentil Wellington with roast potatoes, vegetable mash and vegan gravy.

Sunday opening times: 10am-10.30pm

Whilst this is a nice local pub and I can vouch for its popularity – especially with tourists – I’ve not actually tried the Sunday roast. By all accounts it’s worth a go – you’ve got a choice of aged beef sirloin, maple-cured pork belly or roast chicken with bacon and chestnut stuffing, all served with red wine gravy, Yorkshire pudding, thyme-roasted potatoes, pigs in blankets and veg.

If you’re dining as a group you can share a selection of all three meats, and there’s a vegetarian or vegan nut roast option too. They also serve a variety of premium draught lagers and ciders, plus craft beers, wines, spirits and cocktails.

It might be known as a sports bar and renowned for its super-sized sports events screen, but the Euston Flyer also does – by all accounts – a decent traditional Sunday roast near King’s Cross.

Choose from corn fed chicken supreme with sage and onion stuffing, roasted porchetta or sirloin of beef, all accompanied by roast potatoes, maple carrots, squash mash, cauliflower cheese, seasonal greens, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. There’s also a vegetarian nut roast with the same trimmings.

There’s some lovely sounding sides and add-ons too if you really want to pack your plate out – things like maple roasted piccolo parsnips or chanteney carrots, wild boar and Cumberland pigs in blankets, extra red wine gravy, savoy cabbage, and spiced butternut squash.

Sunday opening hours: 11am-10.30pm, food served 11am-9pm

This classic family and dog-friendly pub close to Euston Station is known for looking like the back end of HMS Royal George – a Royal Navy ship which was the largest warship in the world at the time of her launch in February 1756.

You’ve got a garden here, as well as live music and regular sports screenings, plus plenty of beers to choose from.

Again I’ve not tried it personally yet, but the Sunday roast offers a choice of beef sirloin or roasted half chicken with stuffing, served alongside roast potatoes, Yorkshire pud, greens and carrots, cauliflower cheese and a merlot beef dripping gravy.

The veggie option is a nut roast Wellington with all the trimmings, plus a rich vegetarian gravy. They also do a very reasonably-priced kids Sunday roast with a choice of roast beef or chicken.

A trendy backstreet pub that’s popular with locals, The Harrison serves a variety of real ales, and lays on live music and stand-up comedy a few nights a week. There’s outside seating, all covered and heated – and it’s child and dog-friendly too.

The Sunday roast is said to be an institution in itself. Choose from roast beef, lamb, pork belly or chicken, or the vegetarian nut roast or falafel roast.

Sunday food serving times 8am-9pm

Situated on the first floor of St Pancras Station, this appears to be a nice option for a Sunday roast near King’s Cross, not least because of its iconic surroundings.

The roast is accompanied by giant Yorkshire puddings, beef dripping potatoes (vegan option available), seasonal veg and lashings of gravy. Choose from dry aged West Country rump of beef, Shropshire half roast chicken with bread sauce, or Dingley Dell roast pork loin with crackling and apple sauce. The vegan option is Jerusalem artichoke, wild mushroom and heritage squash Wellington.

They also do sharing roasts for groups – select from a whole roast chicken, or the ‘Poet’s Roast’ – a trio of beef, pork loin and chicken, both with all the trimmings. The sides sound interesting too – Cumberland sausage stuffing, cauliflower cheese, or pigs in duvets – no blankets here!

Located in the trendy “music centre” of King’s Cross, the Water Rats has an intriguing history behind it – having played host to Bob Dylan’s first ever UK gig in 1962, The Pogues’ first gig in 1982, and Oasis’ first London gig in 1994.

You might not get to hear this lot when you’re tucking into your Sunday roast, but you’ll nevertheless no doubt enjoy the atmosphere, as well as a choice of roast chicken or roast beef with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, seasonal veg and gravy. Veggie option available.

Open Sunday 10am-10.30pm

This is one of our favourite restaurants in King’s Cross and we’ve tried all sorts off the menu – except the Sunday roast. Perhaps one day we will – but meantime, I can vouch for it being an exceptional modern waterside venue, with floor to ceiling glass walls, and wrap-around terraces with vistas over the Regent’s Canal and Granary Square.

The Sunday roast options include half roast Castlemead chicken, 32-day dry-aged roast sirloin, and veggie mushroom and beetroot Wellington, all served with seasonal vegetables, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and house gravy. If you fancy it, add a side of Suffolk chorizo mac & cheese, maple glazed pigs in blankets, Lyonnaise potatoes, or extra roasties.

We love this place with its spectacular chandeliers and Grade II listed building surroundings. We will at some point try the Sunday roast – but for now I can tell you that the menu consists of a refreshingly straightforward choice of roasted half chicken with stuffing, roast beef, or roast lamb rump. All served with Yorkshire pudding, rosemary roast potatoes, green beans with almonds, carrot and swede mash, and red wine gravy.
