Gino has two shops side by side just around the corner from the Mentone. One is an authentic men’s barbers, the other a ladies’ hairdressers.

Hailing from Naples in the Campania region of Italy, Gino was 18 when he went to work at his uncle’s barber shop. Having mastered his trade, he moved to England and secured a role at the prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel hairdressing salon in London’s Park Lane.

Gino opened his gents’ hairdressing shop in Marchmont Street in 1995, pretty much around the same time as I took over running the Mentone from my parents. His ladies hairdressing salon next door came later in 2010.

Gino’s a really nice guy, and he and his great team have become our go-to family hairdressers over the years. They’ve been featured in the likes of GQ Magazine and the Independent newspaper, so they must be good!

Gino’s ladies hair salon next door to the barbers has a team of senior hair stylists and colourists on hand to create personalised cuts and styles. They’re really attentive in here, taking time to advise customers on styling, and offering after care advice to maintain your new look.

Gino also has a therapy room downstairs in a tranquil little courtyard. So I’m told by the female members of my family and hotel staff, as beauty salons near Cartwright Gardens London go, it’s a real hidden gem.

Treatments offered here include facials, waxing, eyelash tinting and eyebrow shaping. Booking ahead is highly recommended. Use the same number as the ladies’ hair salon, 020 7278 1511. The therapy room is open Monday to Friday 9am to 7.30pm, and Saturdays 9am to 5pm.
