Mother’s Day Treats and Experiences around King’s Cross and Bloomsbury

Mother’s Day in Bloomsbury & King’s Cross
When it comes to Mother’s Day in King’s Cross, it’s tempting to default to lunch and a bunch of flowers. But if you’re after something a little more fun, thoughtful or unique to treat Mum, there’s loads to explore around King’s Cross and Bloomsbury.
From pampering and spa packages to creative workshops, vintage shopping, waterside adventures and park-side strolls, I’ve listed a few ideas that’ll help you spoil Mum properly, whether you’re planning ahead or trying to find something last minute.
Mother’s Day spa experience
St Pancras Spa (located within the Renaissance Hotel on the Euston Road, around 7 minutes on foot from the Mentone Hotel) is probably the most well-known spa in King’s Cross, and they offer some lovely treatment packages which would be ideal for Mother’s Day.
The Dine and Unwind package includes four hours of relaxation, including access to the salt-wall sauna, steam room and heated hydro-pool. This is all followed by dinner at the excellent and very British Hansom restaurant in the Renaissance Hotel.

There’s also a Lunch Escape package which includes a 60-minute massage or facial, followed by lunch at the Hansom. There’s an Afternoon Tea version as well.
If you prefer, you can buy gift vouchers for a range of treatments and packages. That way you can leave Mum to choose her own favourite spa experience.
Yoganic Thai Spa and Massage on the Caledonian Road is about a 15 minute walk from the hotel. It’s nothing like the setting of St Pancras Spa by any means, but if Mum fancies a professional massage, it’s a good option.
They do reflexology massage, hot oil massage, lymphatic massage and a 90-minute My Spa treatment which includes a full body hot stone massage plus a body scrub and hot oil massage.
Also have a look at Rena Spa at NYX Hotel Holborn. Treatments include facials, massages and body wraps. It’s all centred on ‘ishga’ which is Gaelic for water and uses hand-harvested seaweed.
They do a range of packages, some of which include a glass of Prosecco. It’s just a 16 minute walk from the Mentone Hotel.
If a massage sounds like a good idea for Mum this Mother’s Day, have a look at my separate blog on best places for a massage near King’s Cross.
Hair and beauty treats
A bit of hair and beauty TLC is always a solid shout for Mother’s Day, and there are some excellent salons and treatment rooms within easy reach of the Mentone Hotel.
I’ve written a blog highlighting what’s around the area (best hair and beauty salons near King’s Cross), but top picks have to be Gino Hairdressing which is on the hotel doorstep.
Gino is our family’s go-to hairdresser and he’s been the star of many a feature in top magazines like GQ over the years. A personal recommendation from me and my family without a doubt.
His ladies’ hairdressing salon has a team of fantastic senior stylists and colourists, and downstairs he’s got a therapy room offering facials, eyelash tinting, eyebrow shaping and waxing.

There are a few more hair salons in the area, as well as a variety of nail and beauty places, such as Beauty and Pampering which is literally just two minutes from the hotel and offers skin treatments, manicures and pedicures, eyelash and eyebrow treatments, facials and massage.
Mother’s Day afternoon tea in London with a difference
Afternoon tea in London is always a classic Mother’s Day treat, but it doesn’t have to be the usual sandwiches and white tablecloths at a posh hotel.
For example – and you can book these from reception at the Mentone – there are themed afternoon tea bus tours that bring together sightseeing trips with afternoon tea.
From ABBA-inspired experiences to London pizza and drinks tours that take in the sights of the city while you enjoy sounds of the 80s, 90s and 2000s, there’s plenty to choose from to give Mum a treat that’s a bit different from the norm.
If you do want something more on the classic side, take a look at my Best Places for Afternoon Tea blog for suggested venues in Bloomsbury and King’s Cross, including the aforementioned Hansom at the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel, the Bloomsbury Hotel, and the Waldorf Hotel, all just minutes on foot from the Mentone or a quick taxi ride away.

Creative & cultural treats for Mum
If your mum’s more into museums and cultural or crafting experiences than posh dining, massages and facials, there’s plenty she might love around Bloomsbury and King’s Cross.
At Coal Drops Yard, Roseur the florist offers a range of flower arranging workshops. As does Botanique at Exmouth Market EC1R (about a 20 minute walk from the hotel).
Or how about a mosaic art workshop? Here’s where Mum gets to design and create her own Turkish mosaic lamp. This really is something else and it’s reasonably priced too. Plus you get to sample some lovely Turkish tea and rose Turkish delight while you put together your unique creation.
If Mum likes museums, then how about booking her onto the Treasures Tour at the British Library? She’ll get to see amazing artefacts like the second largest atlas in the world, the Magna Carta and all sorts of other fascinating things. The tour takes around an hour and is fully guided. Plus as a finishing touch you can add on a coffee and cake treat in one of the library’s own cafés.
There are plenty of other museums near King’s Cross, from the world-famous British Museum to a few of the more unusual ones such as the Cartoon Museum, the Museum of Comedy, the London Canal Museum, the Postal Museum, the Charles Dickens Museum and the Sir John Soane’s Museum. All covered in my blog on museums near King’s Cross.

Mother’s Day retail therapy
If Mum enjoys a good shopping spree, you’re in the right place. Around King’s Cross and Bloomsbury there’s a mix of markets, independent shops and quirky boutiques that are perfect for finding thoughtful gifts or just spending a fun afternoon window shopping.
Canopy Market on Granary Square is a great place to start, with its covered stalls which are great for bad weather days. It’s open 12-8pm on Fridays, and 11am-6pm Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays. As well as street food and fresh produce, you’ll find homewares, ceramics, accessories and jewellery, all from local traders.

Lower Stable Street Market is an outdoor market known for its charming cobbled street setting. It’s open Thursday and Friday 12pm-7pm, and Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays 11am-6pm. There’s a variety of food and drink, homewares, art, books and clothing from emerging designer-makers who are all grateful for local support.
Coal Drops Yard is a canalside retail development 20 minutes walking distance from the hotel with loads of shops and eateries.
You’ve got some well-known shops here, but do have a look at some of the more unusual places, like Boutique by Shelter, a charity shop supporting housing charity Shelter; ba&sh, the Bohemian-inspired clothing outlet; Beyond Retro, for vintage and retro fashion finds; Kartel the family-run watch specialists, and Maya Magal for bespoke jewellery creations.
If Mum loves a classic read, head to the Word on the Water Floating Bookshop moored close to Granary Square. It’s a second hand bookshop set on a 1920s Dutch barge and home to around 4,000 books. Really friendly owners, and a nice cosy setting inside with a wood burner stove and comfy armchairs. A great experience for booklovers.

offering around 4,000 titles to browse.

And if she’s a Harry Potter fan, be sure to stop by the Harry Potter Shop at King’s Cross Station on Platform 9¾ – and don’t miss the famous photo opportunity outside the store. It’s free, just be prepared for the queues.
There are plenty more retail therapy ideas in my blog on top places to shop around King’s Cross.

Mother’s Day on the water
If Mum enjoys being near the water, there are a couple of lovely ways to celebrate Mother’s Day without straying too far from King’s Cross.
A Thames river cruise is a nice option, especially if you want to see London from a different angle. There are plenty of sightseeing, lunch and afternoon cruises available, taking in the main landmarks at a gentle pace. It’s an easy way to spend a few hours together without feeling rushed.
Closer to home, the London Canal Museum runs special Mother’s Day boat trips on their narrowboat, Long Tom. These cruises last around 80 minutes and travel through Regent’s Canal and Islington Tunnel, with everyone getting a window seat. Along the way, a guide shares a bit of local history, and you’re treated to tea or coffee with a pastry, scone and cake, depending on the time of day.
Both options offer something a little different — relaxed, scenic, and a nice way to slow down and enjoy some quality time together.

Treat Mum to a glass of fizz
If Mum enjoys a glass of fizz, the Searcys Champagne Bar at St Pancras International is a lovely place to stop. It’s known for its elegant setting, the famous “Press for Champagne” button, and its long list of sparkling wines from around the world.
There’s also a good food menu with sharing plates and light bites, so easy to turn it into a relaxed lunch or afternoon treat.

A peaceful Mother’s Day stroll
Sometimes the nicest way to spend Mother’s Day is simply getting outside and having a wander together. One of the great things about Bloomsbury and King’s Cross is how many green spaces and quiet corners there are, all within easy walking distance of the hotel.
If the weather’s behaving, you could head over to Regent’s Park, maybe grab a coffee and cake, or take a walk up to Primrose Hill for the views. Closer by, Brunswick Square Gardens is a lovely spot to sit for a while, and Camley Street Natural Park is always a surprise — a little pocket of wildlife right next to the canal.

If Mum enjoys walking with a bit of purpose, I’ve also put together a guide to the best local walks and literary tours, covering everything from Blue Plaque routes to canal paths and themed walks. And my Hidden Gems blog is worth a look too if you fancy discovering a few places you’d probably never stumble across on your own.
You don’t always have to have a big plan. Sometimes a gentle walk, a chat and a bit of fresh air is just what everyone needs to make the day special.
Take in a film – or a live performance
If Mum enjoys a good show or a trip to the cinema, you’re well covered for Mother’s Day around Bloomsbury and King’s Cross. It’s an easy way to spend a few hours together, especially if you fancy something relaxed.
Five minutes around the corner from the hotel is the Shaw Theatre. It’s an intimate venue with around 450 seats, and they put on a nice mix of musicals, comedies and dramas, often shows you won’t see in the bigger West End theatres. Be sure to book in advance though, as tickets aren’t sold on the door. Have a look at what’s on and buy your tickets online.

For film fans, the Curzon Bloomsbury Cinema is another local favourite. It’s in the Brunswick Centre, just six minutes from the Mentone. It’s an old-school arthouse cinema with six screens, including the lovely Renoir screen with reclining seats and a VIP balcony. They show a good mix of independent, foreign and classic films, and there’s a café and bar on site if you want to make an evening of it. Latest film listings can be viewed here.

A little further away, but still walkable, is the Everyman Cinema King’s Cross. This is a more luxurious option, with sofas, armchairs and food and drink brought to your seat. It’s great if Mum likes her films with a bit of comfort thrown in. Latest film listings and bookings here.

If you want more ideas, I’ve put together a full cinema guide covering other local options too, and there are plenty of places nearby for a drink or bite to eat afterwards if you fancy rounding off the day. Check out my guide to nightlife in Bloomsbury for inspiration.
